Lecture Series: “Heritage Studies” (Winter Semester 2026/27)

What is heritage, who defines it, and how does it shape relationships between people, places, objects, and other living beings?

This interdisciplinary lecture series introduces students to current debates and methods in critical heritage and museum studies. Topics include tangible and intangible cultural heritage, biocultural heritage, heritage ecologies, human–environment relations, more-than-human perspectives, ecological justice, and alternative archives.

Lectures by scholars from the University of Bonn and invited international guests are complemented by round-table discussions, an artist talk, and a film screening. The series offers students an engaging space to explore how heritage is produced, contested, and reimagined—and how it can contribute to more plural and sustainable futures.

Organized by:
Jun. Prof. Dr. Julia Binter (Global Heritage Lab, TRA Present Pasts, University of Bonn)
Prof. Dr. Carla Jaimes Betancourt (Anthropology of the Americas, University of Bonn)
