Our colleague Yohannes Mulat Mekonnen joins EUARE 2026

Held under the theme “Religion and (In)Equalities,” this year’s conference brings together scholars from across Europe and beyond to explore the many dimensions of inequality in religion and society.

As part of a panel organised by Cambridge Anthropology-Theology (CAT), Yohannes will present his paper, “What Isn’t Sacred: Missionary Collections and the Hierarchy of Values.” The paper examines how inequalities are produced and sustained within missionary collections. Focusing on the missionary museum as a space where different forms of spiritual heritage and world-making encounter the Christian missionary gaze, his presentation explores how Christian theology positions itself as a framework for representing others, and how this representational authority renders the heritage of other spiritual traditions non-sacred.

Through this analysis, Yohannes makes visible the politics of value embedded in missionary collecting practices and contributes to broader discussions on religion, heritage, and inequality.

If you are attending EUARE 2026, we warmly invite you to join the session.
