Lecture Series: “Was uns prägt: Identité(s) en mutation” (27.04.2026)

As part of the interdisciplinary lecture series “Was uns prägt: Identité(s) en mutation”, organized by the Institut français Bonn in collaboration with the University of Bonn, Julia Binter (Global Heritage Lab) will give a public lecture on 27th of April 2026 at 18:15 in Bonn.

The lecture series explores how identities are shaped by family, cultural traditions, social changes and personal experiences. These factors are in a constant state of flux, often contradictory and rarely clear-cut. Julia Binter will contribute to this discussion with insights from her work on heritage, memory, and global entanglements:

Focusing on clothing as a powerful medium of identity formation and expression, she examines how fashion operates within and is shaped by historical power relations. Fashion is not always a matter of free choice; particularly in the context of colonial encounters, it is always subject to unequal power relations. In missionary contexts, discarding pre-Christian clothing and adopting European attire was considered a central sign of conversion. In her lecture, Julia Binter will provide insight into this transdisciplinary research process and reflect on the findings presented in the exhibition “Dressing Resistance: Fashion and the Heritage of Mission” at the Global Heritage Lab at the University of Bonn from May 2025 to February 2026.

This lecture will be held in German.

The lectures will take place at the Robert-Schuman-Saal of the Institut français Bonn, Adenauerallee 35, 53113 Bonn.
